Neu Wieviel Religion braucht eine plurale Gesellschaft?
Zeitschriftenartikel

Since the end of the 1980s, the presence of religion in the public sphere has increased. On the one hand, a re-politicisation of religion can be observed, on the other hand a re-theologisation of politics. At the same time, tendencies of secularisation continue, whereby secularisation, pluralisation and individualisation of religion do not form a contradiction. For pluralistic societies the question is not only how much religion they still need, but also how much religion they can tolerate and what the inner binding forces of pluralistic societies are. At the same time, the question arises as to the capacity of religions themselves for pluralism. Different concepts of a public theology react to this mixed situation. This article gives an overview of the main topics of the debate and analyses the potential of public theologies for interreligious dialogue in a plural society. Central themes of the dialogue are religious freedom and tolerance, on which the contribution offers its own reflections at the end.
