The article relates various discourse contributions from the period from 1885 to 1910 that led to "Islam" being conceived as an object of knowledge of German-language scholarship and education and that it was thereby classified as a "religion" in the sense of the contemporary discourse on religion, i.e. as a composite of written traditions and currently lived practice. It will be traced how certain elements were canonised as necessary components of an overall representation of "Islam" and how, in the process, formations of judgement also made a lasting impression on the discourse, to which alternatives would certainly have been conceivable, in particular the almost unquestioned validity of the early Islamic tradition on the biography of the Prophet Muhammad and the prioritisation of the Sunna over the Shi'a.
