In the past decade, there have been considerable cutbacks in a particular discipline of Protestant Theology, a discipline which up until recently has contributed to the unique profile of many departments of Protestant Theology: Confessional Studies of Orthodox Churches. First, the paper takes stock of the current situation of the discipline in Germany; it outlines the past and present locations of research and teaching on the subject of Orthodox Churches and its specific areas in the form of theses. Thereafter the most of important aspects are identified which from the perspective of the authors make necessary the preservation of the discipline. This includes concrete perspectives regarding the two locations in Germany where Confessional Studies of Orthodox Churches should be done in the future.
