This article is meant as a contribution to the concept of intergenerational responsibility from a theological perspective. Drawing on the social philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, it is shown that the basic ethical situation comprises both the overtaxing of the actors and the (un)moral comparison between those in need of help. However, this addresses the question of the identity of the actors and thus the question of how guilt can be overcome. The article shows that a conception of responsibility that addresses these problems inevitably requires theological figures of justification.
