Earnest Hemingway: The Gambler, the Nun and the Radio
eMedium

Earnest Hemingway (1899 - 1961) was one of the most important American writers. Besides being an author, he also was a reporter and a war correspondent. In 1918, he volunteered for the American Field Service. He was stationed at the North Italian border and the border between Germany and France, where he was seriously wounded. The short story The Gambler, the Nun and the Radio was published in 1933. In it, Hemingway incorporates his own experiences during a stay in hospital in 1930, but abstracts from them and has his main character reflect upon the "opium for the people" with a radio as his only connection to the outside.
